Introducing OFF MUTE, Base's New Platform on Design Education
INTRODUCING OFF MUTE: a new platform on design education by Base.
If school teaches you how to think, studio life teaches you how to decide. But most of what matters sits in between.
At Base, we talk about this gap all the time. With interns, juniors, students, and each other. And we kept coming back to the same question: why is so much of the most useful knowledge still locked in side-conversations?
So we created OFF MUTE: a series of informal conversations bridging design education and reality. The kind of things usually said off record, shared off mute. Warm, honest, unfiltered.
And because everyone learns differently, OFF MUTE lives as a microsite where you choose your mode:
ON MUTE = read 📖
OFF MUTE = listen 🎧
The first conversation brings together Bruce Vansteenwinkel (Senior Designer at BaseBRU) and Carlos Bocai (Design Director at BaseNYC). They reflect on what design education gave them, what it didn’t, and how teaching, mentoring, and studio life shaped the way they think today.

More conversations are coming, with voices from inside and outside Base. Keep your eyes, or ears, wide open.
